7 Tips for Virtual Interviews

By Alexandra Cross on

Although return-to-office is becoming more common, many companies still conduct virtual interviews. And while they may seem less formal, virtual interviews require the same level of preparation and professionalism as meeting in person. A few small details can make a big difference in how you come across on screen.

Here are 7 tips to help you prepare for a virtual interview:

#1 Test your tech. Before logging on for a virtual interview, test your video and sound. Confirm the location of the link and that it’s working properly. If possible, have a backup device on hand.

#2 Keep your virtual identity professional. Include your email and full name as your username on the screen.

#3 Dress the part. Treat a virtual interview like an in-person interview. We’ve found that bright/solid colors and avoiding crazy patterns help keep the focus on you. Even though you’re on camera, your appearance still plays a big role in first impressions.

#4 Create a background. You don’t need a degree in set design, but a good balance of color, structure and neatness helps. Not too stark or too cluttered. Blur your background on Zoom or create your own if needed.

#5 Pay attention to body language. Confidence is conveyed when sitting up straight, smiling and making eye contact. Just because you’re meeting virtually doesn’t mean body language and presence matter any less.

#6 Limit distractions. This can be a tall order, but silence your phone, close windows, and perhaps most importantly, have coverage for children and/or pets.

#7 Make a connection. Be professional, but yourself, with the interviewer. When all else is equal, your personality could break the tie between you and someone else. Authentic connection often makes a lasting impression beyond qualifications alone.

Virtual interviews are most likely here to stay, even as workplaces evolve. By preparing thoughtfully and showing up with intention, you can ensure the screen doesn’t get in the way of making a strong, memorable impression.
